Pretty Much crap

Hi folks,

It feels very strange to be writing again, especially in a public forum, because I’m not sure if I’m ready—whatever that means. But NPR’s Ira Glass says that all creatives have a sense of good taste, even though when we first start out, there is usually a pretty wide gap between our sense of taste and what we’re actually able to create—which is pretty much crap. He urges us to push through this awkward and uncomfortable phase and to just keep creating, create as much as we can no matter how bad it is, with the knowledge that we will one day close the gap.

I have not been following Ira’s advice for an embarrassing amount of time. In fact, I really stopped creating altogether, and have only been absorbing the thoughts and work of other people: books, podcasts, The New York Times…These are all wonderful inputs, but it’s time for my output—no matter how amateurish those outputs might seem at the moment.

There are couple of growth edges that I’m working on at the moment: 1) Rediscovering my creative voice and 2) Understanding how that creative voice fits into my practice, both with this consulting and coaching practice, but also in regard to my larger belief system about life, humanity, and where we’re heading. My hope is that I can use this space to integrate everything together.

Thank you for going on this journey with me. Let’s start creating.
